Joyless Night at AT&T Park – Thoughts & Prayers With the Crawford Family

Most MLB fans probably glanced and seen that the San Francisco Giants lost last night to the Colorado Rockies. What fans probably don’t know is that it was a very somber night at AT&T Park. Gold Glove shortstop Brandon Crawford was absent from the starting lineup. After Wednesday night’s game, Crawford drove to Los Angeles to be with his wife and family as his sister-in-law Jennifer Pippin suddenly passed away.

Crawford did fly back to San Francisco yesterday in time for the Giants game, but he was running on fumes. Manager Bruce Bochy said Crawford only had about 2 1/2 hours of sleep. Which meant there was no way the Giants would even think about starting him. Bochy was even shocked that Crawford came back for the game.

“It’s been a tough 24 hours for Brandon,” said Bochy. “You feel for him with what he’s had to deal with here. His long night, last night, and here comes up to join us and help us try to win a ballgame. It says a lot about Brandon. He didn’t have to be here.”

Crawford did enter the game as a pinch hitter, where the crowd gave him a standing ovation. I’m sure that had to be a very emotional at bat, and he couldn’t have been fully focused with the thoughts running through his head and his lack of sleep. Crawford grounded out to 1st base, and wasn’t able to help the Giants with any comeback.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Crawford and his family as they’re going through this crazy time. Things like this make you take a step back and be thankful for life and realize that baseball is purely for our entertainment and not life or death (like some of us take it at times).

Below is a post on Instagram from Crawford’s wife Jalynne on the passing of her sister.
